Somewhere in this world, a web designer is getting their backside kicked. Why? Because they think it’s okay to make ambiguous links for people to click. This started way back in the day when people were using.. do you remember it? Geocities! I’ve even been guilty of making the ambiguous click here link from time to time.

Typically, there’s context around those links, but I’ve noticed a lot more lately, the links have no context. For example, the link above has nothing to do with the context of the post, really. It’s about how to treat cholesterol.

Ever try to figure out why links are done that way? It’s to make you want to click them. Go ahead, you know you want to. I’ll wait while you click it.

..Didn’t do it? I didn’t think so. My readers are smarter than that, I would hope. At least hover over the link to see where it goes first. You never know when an ambiguous link is going to lead to a virus.

That was the case this morning. I was on Parents.com last night looking at baby names with a friend. This morning, I have an ‘order’, login and password for the site in my email.

I did NOT order anything. I did NOT sign up for the site. I did NOTHING of the likes, nor do I use the email address that they have listed for signing up for stuff. They have my name and my shipping address even. How the HELL that happened, I don’t know, unless they phished my cookies for the information.

I am NOT amused. Not even slightly.

So here’s a little known piece of trivia about me. I went to college for business administration, but I was also working towards a second degree. I wanted to earn a degree in computer science. I wanted to work in software development. The problem, however, is that I didn’t take to the modern languages. I took to the arcane COBOL language and blundered my way through Visual Basic. I failed miserably at learning C++ and those are the two important languages.

It’s crazy, right?

Usually, having a wide selection from which to choose is an advantage. That allows us to identify the products which make the most sense given our personal tastes and circumstances, and many people love picking Cavalier Telephone. Having said that, when it comes to long-distance (LD) phone service, the variety of plans offered by carriers can seem overwhelming. Rarely do they come with a single rate or fee. Instead, the price you’ll pay each month will depend heavily upon your company’s usage; the monthly cost can rise or fall based on several factors.

Below, we’ll describe the items that are most influential to your business’s long-distance phone costs. Then, we’ll take a look at pricing and rates as well as other charges you should watch for. By knowing which factors have the greatest impact upon your bill, you can choose the LD plan that is best suited for your company’s needs and budget, and perhaps pick Cavalier Telephone.

Key Items To Review Before Choosing

Selecting a carrier and a new plan is a long-term investment. Take the time to review your business’s calling patterns over the last several months carefully. That is the only way to ensure that your company will enjoy as much value as possible from the new service, which may very well be Cavalier Telephone.

Determine how many calls and how many minutes you and your staff are spending on non-local connections each month. Also, take note of the average duration of the calls, where they’re being placed to (national versus international), and the rates you’re currently being charged. If you’re paying a different per-minute price at varying times throughout the day, make a note of that, too. That way, you can make a reasonable comparison of other long-distance packages based on your company’s unique call profile.

Pricing And Rates

Many LD carriers advertise plans with one easy rate. However, there is usually more to discover underneath the surface. For example, a provider might charge one fee for calls made to certain locations and a different fee for calls make to other locations. Just realize that these packages are often more complex than they seem.

Also, some carriers charge a variable rate while others charge a fixed price. This is one of the reasons you need to identify your business’s normal calling usage. If a variable price is attached, you’ll likely pay more for connections made during business hours. That said, a variable plan may be less expensive based upon your company’s calling profile.

Additional Charges: Expect The Unexpected

In addition to the per-minute fees you’ll pay for your long-distance service, you may also need to pay monthly fees, minimum charges, and surcharges. Monthly fees can span an enormous range, so ask your provider to clarify whether they levy them and how much they are. Also, if your business’s calling volume fails to exceed a predefined minimum, your LD provider may levy an additional fee. Finally, surcharges can be levied for a wide assortment of actions. Ask your carrier to explain every instance in which a surcharge would be applied to your company’s account.

Partnering with a reliable long-distance provider is an important component in satisfying your business’s phone communication needs. Follow the tips above to select the right plan for your company.

DSL Versus Satellite Broadband: Which Is Better?

Millions of people are confused about the differences between DSL and cable internet connections. Fewer still understand the advantages and disadvantages of satellite internet access. Potential subscribers who want to enjoy the fastest service for the lowest price are understandably bewildered by their choices. Fortunately, the decision is usually a simple one.

For most people, satellite broadband service will be a less than ideal choice. Below, we’ll explain how the service works and the type of customer most likely to use it. We’ll also explore how it compares to a DSL connection. You’ll likely find that if a conventional broadband alternative is available in your area, it will be a better solution.

Satellite Broadband In A Nutshell

In order to understand how satellite broadband (SB) compares to a digital subscriber line, it is worth reviewing how the technology works. The service does not use phone lines, fiber optics, or a cable infrastructure. Instead, the upload and download data transmission takes place via a dish and an orbiting satellite.

The dish must be installed so that it maintains a clear path skyward. If its “view” is obscured (for example, by trees, clouds, etc.), the data transmission may be slowed or temporarily severed.

One of the limitations of SB service is the rate at which you can upload and download data. You can download at rates up to 1.5 Mpbs and upload at 256 Kbps. While that is markedly faster than a dial-up modem, both throughput rates are significantly slower than those offered by a DSL connection.

Another limitation involves price. Given the slower performance of the technology, you would expect its price to be lower than that of a digital subscriber line. However, that is rarely the case. More often than not, SB service costs as much, if not more, than a conventional broadband connection.

Is A Digital Subscriber Line Better?

Simply put, yes. First, a digital subscriber line is normally less expensive on a monthly basis and it’s easier to install. Second, it will seldom require a long-term contract while an SB provider will push for such a commitment. Third (as noted above), the data transfer rate of DSL is almost always much faster than that offered by satellite internet. By contrast, SB will often carry a higher monthly bill, cost several hundreds of dollars to install, and offer a slower datastream. What’s more, it can be unreliable if the path of the dish is obscured in any way.

The reason SB customers use the service is because their alternatives are usually limited. Subscribers often live in areas that lay outside the territory serviced by DSL Internet Providers. In that case, the technology – as limited as it is – might be considered valuable. However, if you live in an area that is near a DSL provider, they will usually be able to offer the most value (i.e. speed, reliability, etc.) for the price.

I was also having MORE connection issues, which I’ve narrowed down to being something getting waterlogged, either the line, the jack or the filter because once it stops raining and starts to dry up some, my connection behaves.

I got to angry last night that I told my husband to take a life insurance policy out on me and let me walk out in traffic. This whole problem needs to stop, like now. Especially with everything else that I’ve got going on. Maybe tomorrow I can sit down and put together a post and catch up on everything. Tonight, I’m tired and still have stuff I need to install.

I should have inventoried my programs. *laugh*

Sometimes, I wonder if it’s possible to declare net-ruptcy like you can declare bankruptcy. Is there anything like debt consolidation for those of us who spread ourselves too thin? I mean, there’s blogging on whatever site like Livejournal or Blogger, Twitter, Plurk, Facebook and Myspace. There’s also Friend Feed, Flickr, G-Mail and G-Talk, plus AIM, Y!M, MSN/Windows Live and even Jabber and Skype.

With all these different social media outlets, and that’s just a few listed above, how do you keep from spreading yourself too thin? Should you ‘just say no’ to the next one? I know I’d like to. Maybe we should start a revolution? Go back to E-mail being the best form of cyber communication. Think it would work?

Nah… I didn’t think so either.

They say that people online have this attitude like they can say or do anything they want and it won’t matter to anyone. This is not the case. There are are real people with feelings on the other side of the screen. I don’t know why people seem to think that the person on the other end is completely unaffected. I don’t know how many people can understand that, though, unless they have been around the Internet for as long as some of us have. Sure, it’s all about social media these days, but there’s more to social media than just sharing your story, there is reading the stories of those you choose. That means that whatever I write, someone is reading. It may not be millions of people, but someone is out there reading it, whether they comment or not. With that being said, I’ve been online on a regular basis since 1995, so I’ve seen a lot of people come and go. I’ve seen a lot of services come and go. I’ve also seen a lot of circles of friends shift and change and it somehow still surprises me when people are so willing to toss aside their circle of friends so easily.

Another part of the Internet that gets me is how many people seem to think that social networking is a new thing. For instance, I watch and listen to Leo Laporte’s TWiT Netcast Network body of shows. I don’t watch his live stream as much as I did a while ago, but I still download and listen to his podcasts daily. In fact, I’m listening to him today. He has been on the front edge of technology for many years, he’s been doing things for years that just now coming into the mainstream. For instance, he has done shows that have guests from multiple countries using Skype for as long as he has had his netcasts. Now it’s starting to become mainstream because Oprah is using it on her shows to be able to accommodate guests from different locations without sending out the satellite trucks and whatnot. Skype is a lower cost solution for networks to be able to get their guests on their shows. One thing that Leo needs to do, though is get some life insurance at Wholesale rates for the next time his stability ball bursts while he’s doing show.

There’s so much more that I could say about people and the new ‘net-itude, but I think I’ve blathered on enough.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me about the IRS is the length of time that it takes for them to process things. We did our taxes first thing this year, they were mailed before the end of January. Yes, I said mailed. We mailed them in because we had extra forms to send. The problem with that? They lost the extra forms! I kid you not, they lost them for the second year in a row. It severely pisses me off that they continue to do this.

So, I learn at the beginning of March they lost my papers, I reprint and refile it. Now, a month later, we’ve not heard anything about whether they’ve received it or not. I called Thursday, enquiring about it, and found that they have received it, but the processing time would be far longer than the normal.

This year, the processing for the forms is 11 weeks. The time starts from when that form was received, not from the time the return was received, however. That is also a change. All in all, this means that our tax refund will not be processed until the first of June. What the hell? That sucks major amounts of ass. I’m fed up with the IRS, fed up with having to file forms two or three times before they actually get it.

Why is this so frustrating? Because I have plans for part of the money. I had planned to get more laptop memory and upgrade it to be able to use it for more than a random lookup of an item or something. I’d like to be able to use it to do more than VNC into my desktop as well, but that’s about all that it’s good for because it only has 512mb of RAM. The desktop is far faster and more responsive.

I also want to get a new camera. I want something with a decent optical zoom. I’m thinking about getting a Canon Powershot SX110IS 9MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom, but I’m not sure if I want to give up my Kodak. I love my Kodak, but I know I need a better camera. I’m sure I can find a Kodak that’s just as good as the Canon.

Meh. I’m frustrated, but if it doesn’t come to June, that means we’ll have some play money for the summer, which is pretty atypical. It’ll be nice, but there’s so many things that I need that money for right now. It sucks, really, but what can you do? Other than say FU to the IRS.

I forgot that today is Pi day! In honor of Pi day, however, I did partake in some pie. I made peanut butter pie today. Screw the peanut butter recall, I’m going to eat peanut butter if I want it. We checked to make sure ours wasn’t part of the recall. It was the easiest pie I’ve ever made, too. Made a simple crust out of nilla wafers instead of graham crackers, creamed together the peanut butter, cream cheese and confectioners sugar. Let it mix until it was soft and fluffy, then folded in cool whip. Filled the crust and put it in the freezer until it was set up. Transferred to the fridge after it was set.

I also decided today was a good day to make chicken wings. That was kind of a bad idea, though. They weren’t thawed completely when I went to bake them so they ended up steaming in the pan I poured off a ton of water when I took them out. They were alright, but not as good as the last batch I made. Guess I’ll stick with tossing them in the fryer from now on, since baking was made of fail.

I am also highly annoyed with my DSL provider. This is the second time in less than a month that we’ve gone without Internet for multiple hours. It went down around 9:30 last night and I have no idea what time it came back. It was still down when I went to bed around midnight or so. I woke up around 8 and it was back up. It’s not cool, really. It makes it hard to look at Sferra linens. Yeah, I really was trying to find new blankets for our bed. It’s time to think about a lighter weight spring/summer blanket and I don’t really have any that match my bedding. The price for the Sferra isn’t bad, but a bit out of my price range. Definitely beautiful and I’d love to have some of their bedding.

Ah well, I guess that since Pi day is over, so is this post.

One of these days, I’m going to break down and get myself one of those nifty flash memory drives so that I can back up my documents and not have to worry about having space on my server. It’s kind of frustrating at times, especially when I’m wishing that I had my stuff when I’m at the library or whatnot.

I know that it’d be handy for other reasons too, especially when I have to go fix other people’s computers or do stuff for others. Maybe when the tax refund comes in, I’ll get one.

Okay, I’m not a big tech head, really. I’m an end user more than anything. So what on God’s green earth am I doing with Windows 7 Beta? I’m doing just what I wanted to do – I’m trying Windows 7 for myself before the complainers can ruin it for me like was done with Vista.

So far, I like Windows 7. The key things that I have found that I like:

Less CPU Usage

Easier to personalize

More clean looking

Things I don’t like:

The lack of ability to change the taskbar much

The fact that some things that normally drop into the ‘notification area’ (systray) stay in your task bar

Items in the quick launch expand into full tabs when opened.

These are just a few things from a couple hours of usage in a Virtual Machine setting. I would complain about the lack of Aero in VM but that’s –my- problem, not Windows.

In today’s world, more and more businesses have a web presence, a place where people can find information about your business before heading out of their house on a wild goose chase. Business Website Design is one of the most important things that you need to think about when you think that you want your business to have a web presence. Why is design so important? Because if your web presence doesn’t look good, people will assume that your world presence doesn’t look good.

Another key factor in having a good web presence is having good Business Web Hosting. If you have unreliable web hosting, your web presence will be unreliable. If you have an unreliable web presence, potential customers will assume that your business is unreliable. If a potential customer can’t view your web presence, they won’t be able to determine whether you have what they are looking for and you will lose them as a customer.

Website Maintenance is also an important factor in having a web presence. Why? If you don’t maintain your web presence, then your potential customers will not know whether your business will meet their current needs. Every business is ever changing, so must their web presence, especially if they wish to compete in the current market.

And lastly, a well maintained, well designed and well hosted web presence can help your business obtain better SEO Results. Improve your web presence and you will improve your standing in search engine results. Improve your search engine standings and you can improve your business.

Okay, we all know that the digital transition is going to happen on February 17th. Well the other night, they turned off analog signal for 5 minutes so people could see if they are ready for it. I figured, no big deal, I just bought a new HDTV this summer for the main television in the house. So we’re watching television the other night and it came time for the ‘test’ to happen and lo and behold, my networks went poof.

Wtf? The only thing that we can figure is that the digital signals from our major networks aren’t strong enough for us to pull in. What’s weird, however, is that our PBS digital channels come in perfectly. Yeah, I’m *furious* about this. I can’t afford to spend money on an outdoor antennae that we’ll have to adjust on a daily basis. So now what the hell do we do? We need our local news.

You know what I say? Digital Transition this. Leave our analog signals alone!

We’re living in a world that is almost completely cell phone driven. There are even studies that say that computers are going to become obsolete because of cell phones. This really doesn’t surprise me, but I don’t think that it will happen any time soon. They have to change things about the way billing is done. But anyway, that’s totally not the point of this post!

It is nearly Christmas. Wait, what? It is?? Yeah if it crept up on you like it did me, you still have eight more shopping days. Want a great gift idea? How about a cell phone. You can even buy mobile phones online now and have it delivered to the recipient if they live out of town. What could be better than that? You don’t have to go out to the store, you don’t have to worry about shipping and you can pick from a lot more phones than you could at a store.

What could be better than special mobile phone deals even? I mean, it’s Christmas so everyone wants to get great gifts, while saving as much money as possible. The economy is in the toilet, so why not take the time to research and find the best deals possible on something that is becoming such a vital part of most people’s lives now.

One thing to remember when cell phone shopping, however, is that you have to be well aware of is that not every phone is available for every phone provider. Make sure you know what cell phone service you or the lucky recipient has before purchasing anything. Shop smart using Mobiles22 and you won’t spent as much money as you would have without them.

I have to wonder if it’s because sites end up overloading their keyword tags with everything possible to get traffic. Who knows.

Anyone who owns a domain of any sort needs to have some sort of hosting, right? Sometimes, domains come with webhosting, but not very often, so that means that you have to figure out which service is going to be the best for your needs. For instance, if you are going to host a business, then you need to have a host that works for business. You can’t run a business without a shopping cart, which are usually only part of business hosts.

Think carefully, before purchasing any sort of hosting because there are some out there that aren’t worth hosting with. Make sure to read all the reviews before giving any money to any host. Let Web Hosting Geeks help you find the host that suits you best. If you plan to have multiple domains, then you need to have a host that allows for multiple domain hosting and enough space to do so. Websites can be small or large, depending on what you plan on hosting on your site. For instance, if you’re hosting just a plain website, it won’t take more than a few megabytes of space, but if you want to host a blog or full service domain, you’ll need a lot more space. If you are hosting within a budget, then you’ll have to figure out just what it is.

With the Christmas shopping season on the upswing, everyone is trying to figure out what kind of gifts to get for the teenager on their shopping list. I know that, as the aunt of an 18 year old, it’s getting to be more and more of a struggle to figure out christmas gift ideas for him.. He’s always asking for things are out of reach or for things that his parents should be buying for him. One of the greatest gifts to give any teenager, however, would be an ipod.

There are so many sites that offer shopping information on the various iPods, so you can learn more about them before purchasing one. You can learn about the different features of the iPods so that you can pick out the best one for your particular teenager. You can even use the price comparison site to figure out where you can get the best price.

For instance, you can learn about the advantages or disadvantages of the iPod classic as compared to the iPod shuffle. These are the two iPods that I often think about when I think about purchasing a gift for someone. They are the most cost efficient choices, but they also have fewer features than the iPod nano and iPod Touch. The iPod Touch is the newest iPod and has all the features that anyone could ever want, and probably never need in an iPod including the ability to use different applications from the iTunes Store.

Hopefully the gift idea of an iPod will help you in your Christmas shopping.

Every day there is at least 3 commercials for high definition television, especially with the Digital Conversion coming in February. I have to say that the transition bothers me greatly, but we have to take it and accept it whether we want to or not. I already upgraded one television, the other will have to wait a while, though.

The problem is, unless you have a new television, you have to have a converter box. That’s fine, but that doesn’t mean that if you buy a plasma television you will automatically be fine. No, you may even have to buy a new antennae if you aren’t getting your local channels via cable or satellite. This isn’t really fair either.

What should you do? Find yourself an online plasma store and get yourself a new television, don’t bother with the converter box. Why? In the end, you’ll need a new television, so why buy the box? Upgrade your cable, upgrade your satellite service, it’s worth the initial cost. Trust me.

It’s frustrating to try to use it lately cuz Vista is a memory hog. What can I do tho? I didn’t get it to be able to run a ton and I should be able to use it for my tax class without a problem. I should just remember to take it with me when I know I’m going to have time to kill.

For instance, today I sat for a while at McD’s while Rob had a meeting and I was left twiddling my thumbs with nothing to do. Thankfully I keep a notebook in the car at all times. I started a bit of a story, not that great though, so it’ll probably be just the first couple paragraphs and nothing more.

Does anyone know what a Cat5e Keystone jack is? I have no idea what it is. I try to keep up with technology and gadgets, but this one is something that I’ve never heard of. From looking at pictures, it’s a jack for networking cables along the same line as a telephone jack.

Is it what you see in a hotel that offers wired Internet in their rooms? The jacks you see in the wall to plug your network card into? That’s what it looks like to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was, especially because of it’s resemblance to a phone jack.

Anyone who wants to have a blog or a website of any sort should consider hosting it themselves with their own domain. But in order to do that, you have to have a web host unless you have your own server. The question is, however, which one is the best? It’s pretty hard to determine, but if you read the reviews from people who use the hosts, it’s easier.

What’s even better is not having to search for the reviews and having a site like Web Host Rating that gives you all the information about price, space, user reviews about multiple sites so that people can get the best deal for their needs. You can’t dive on the first deal you see because you can get burnt so easily. What looks good on the outside, may not be so good when you open up the package.
